Dolby Vision Theatrical release of Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ Films on August, 25 2025

The 4K restoration of Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) brings these iconic films back to theaters with cutting-edge visual and audio enhancements, utilizing Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies.

  • Dolby Vision: This advanced HDR (High Dynamic Range) format delivers deeper blacks, sharper contrast, and more vivid colors, allowing audiences to experience Burton’s gothic vision of Gotham City with unprecedented clarity.[1]
  • Dolby Atmos: For the first time, both films are presented with Dolby Atmos, which creates a multi-dimensional sound experience that "envelops audiences in everything from the Batwing’s engines to Danny Elfman’s celebrated score."[1]
  • Filmmaker Perspective: Director Tim Burton expressed his excitement about the restoration: “I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting. Dolby Atmos and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”[1]
  • Historical Significance: The screenings also highlight Dolby’s legacy in cinema. “Batman Returns” made history in 1992 as the first feature film presented in Dolby Digital, the revolutionary audio technology that became synonymous with surround sound in theaters.[1]
  • Industry Recognition: Michelle Maddalena, VP of global content and industry relations at Dolby, stated: “The new presentation of these films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos honors Tim Burton’s bold creativity while showcasing how far audio and image technology have evolved.”[1]
  • Studio Perspective: Jeff Goldstein, president of global distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, added: “With their advancements over the past decades, Dolby now transforms these beloved classics into completely new cinematic experiences through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering unprecedented visual and audio fidelity.”[1]

Home Video UHD Release: HDR10 Only, and Future Prospects for Dolby Vision

While the 2025 theatrical re-release of Tim Burton’s Batman films utilizes Dolby Vision for enhanced dynamic range and color, it is notable that the 2019 Ultra HD Blu-ray (UHD) home video releases of both Batman (1989) and Batman Returns were mastered in HDR10, not Dolby Vision.[2] HDR10, the basic version of HDR, supports 10-bit color and can reproduce about 1 billion unique colors. In contrast, Dolby Vision is an enhanced form of HDR that can use up to 12-bit color, resulting in about 68 billion colors and creating a dramatically richer, more true-to-life image.[3] This means that, until now, home viewers have only experienced these films with HDR10, not the full benefits of Dolby Vision as seen in Dolby Cinema presentations.

The debut of these films in Dolby Vision for theatrical exhibition raises the question of whether Warner Bros. may issue a new UHD Blu-ray release featuring Dolby Vision in the future. This possibility is further supported by recent industry trends: Disney, after a long period of not utilizing Dolby Vision for their UHD releases, has begun consistently releasing new titles in Dolby Vision.[4] If Warner Bros. follows suit, it could signal a broader shift among major studios toward adopting Dolby Vision more widely for home video UHD releases, offering consumers a more cinematic experience at home.
